by the numbers

When Brandon Claussen hit Craig Biggio with a pitch on Friday, he became the 11th pitcher wearing number 34 to plunk Biggio. That broke a 3-way tie between numbers 34, 55, and 37 for largest number of different pitchers hitting Craig Biggio wearing a particular uniform number. But, tonight's starter Tomo Ohka wears number 55, so he could put the number 55 team back into a tie for the lead.
However, for Ohka to bring the total plunking Biggio count for pitchers wearing number 55 into a tie for the lead in that category, he'd need to hit Craig Biggio with a pitch 8 times tonight. Pitchers wearing number 34 hold a commanding lead with 21 total plunks thrown, largely because Pedro Astacio wore #34 while hitting Craig Biggio with a pitch 7 times.
Biggio has been hit been pitchers wearing every number from 14 to 62 except for 20 and 24. 16 different pitchers have hit Biggio with a pitch while wearing 2 or more different uniform numbers, lead by Mark Gardner and Jamey Wright who wore 3 different numbers. Gardner wore 40 and 28 while plunking Biggio for Montreal and number 26 with the Giants. Jamey Wright wore number 19 in Colorado in '97, 21 in Milwaukee, then 16 when he returned to Colorado and plunked Biggio in '05.
