long home stands

Tonight's game kicks off 13 straight home games for the Astros, making it their longest home stand of the season. Craig Biggio hasn't made it through a home stand of 11 or more games without being hit by a pitch since August 19-29, 1996 when he dodged pitches from the Pirates, Cardinals and Cubs for 11 games. The most times he's been hit in a single stretch of home games was 6 during an 11 game home stand from August 12-24, 1997. His longest unplunked home stand was in 1992 when the Astros opened the season with 15 straight home games. (They paid for that later that season with a 26(!) game road trip in July and August. Biggio got hit 3 times.)

The most times he's been hit during a single road trip is 5. He was hit 5 times on a 9 game road trip through Chicago, St. Louis and Pittsburgh from May 2-12, 1995, and had another 5 plunk , 10 game trip in 2000 starting on April 28th and ending May 7th against the Brewers, Cubs, and Dodgers.

In other news, the space shuttle Discovery landed safely today, completing a space flight during which Craig Biggio was hit twice. Discovery moves a little closer to Atlantis on the all time list of space shuttles that were in flight during the most Biggio plunks.

That screwed up schedule in 1992 was because the Republican National Convention was held in the Astrodome, and they needed to convert it to a convention center and back in the middle of the baseball season.

Nice touch on the shuttle/plunk stats.

Sorry the weather/temperature data is not available. Usually the box scores include game time temp so I'm surprised they only have going back five years.

Now if you ask me, and plenty of folks do now and again, “Target” Biggio ain’t never been plunked throughout his entire career during a game in which three Chads made an appearance. Tuesday nights game featured “Dangling” Chad Harville, “Dimpled” Chad Qualls, and “Perforated” Chad Cordero.

Additionally, he ain’t never been plunked during a game featuring three guys named Moe, three guys named Leonard, nor three guys named Irving. Junior tells me the same is true for the names Nubbin, Rune, and Chester, as well as the nickname “Chicken Lips” but I have yet to do the research to verify his claim.

Now Cletus, you need to be more specific because while I know your talking about Chad's appearing as pitchers, other readers might point out last week's game against the Diamondbacks when Jose Valverde plunked Biggio, Chads Qualls and Harville pitched for the Astros, and Chad Tracy pinch hit for the D-backs.

Chad Qualls has appeared in 11 of the 13 plunk games this season.
